The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a report that found out that men who were given a combination of caffeine and the tea extract burned more calories than those given only caffeine. Furthermore the study concluded: “Green tea has thermogenic properties and promotes fat oxidation beyond that explained by its caffeine content per se. The tea extract may play a role in the control of body composition via sympathetic activation of thermogenesis, fat oxidation, or both.”

This type of tea contains high levels of polyphenols, commonly called catechins particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The catechins stimulate the body to burn calories while decreasing body fat. The high levels of catechins polyphenols found in this tea work to intensify the body’s level of fat oxidation, meaning heat formed in the body by burning excess fat as fuel. This ingredient has more catechins than black tea which is why it has rapidly gained in popularity. In addition, green tea leaves are steamed, which prevents the EGCG compound from being oxidized, whereas this isn’t possible with black teas.
